Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: In this seminar, we will read and interpret various texts, speeches, and narratives that address the question of national belonging and civil rights in the framework of the long nineteenth century. After a brief introduction to and revision of key founding narratives of the United States, our focus will be on oratory and life writings by a selection of writers and activists from African American, female, feminist, abolitionist, and Indigenous perspectives. In the final topic section, we will return to canonical literary narratives about personhood and identity in the US. This course requires regular reading and the completion of writing activities as preparation for in-class discussions and term papers.
