Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: Samuel Langhorne Clemens, alias Mark Twain, was a close observer of his contemporaries and contemporary politics. In his works, he frequently poked fun at people's misconceptions of themselves, addressed the social injustices, the downsides of capitalism and the general gullibility of the public. He also played with existing stereotypes of Americans as well as Germans and the German language, most notably in A Tramp Abroad. In this course we will discuss the following examples of his satirical writings: Short Stories: "The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" "The One Million Pound Bank Note" "The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg" Novels: The Prince and the Pauper A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court A Tramp Abroad
