Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: It is strongly recommended that students have successfully completed a proseminar and term paper in (American) literary studies before they register for this class.
Inhalt: This is an advanced seminar in American literary studies focusing on representations of nature in American literature and culture. We will investigate different branches and traditions of American nature writing, such as the idea of the American Pastoral, the discourse of the sublime, American notions of “wilderness.” In particular, we will investigate how the Romantic legacy of thinking and writing about nature has influenced various forms of environmental protection and environmental activism in the twentieth and twenty-first century.
