Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: Borders are frequently a place of political contestation and humanitarian crisis. This has a long history dating back to the interplay of early globalization and growing nation states in the late 19th century. This seminar focuses on the construction and changing meaning of borders and borderlands in North-American history. We will explore the growing literature on American borderlands as transnational and transcultural spaces. Our focus will be on the construction of borders and barriers to the entry of people and goods to the United States, from various ports of entry to the increasing fortification of land-borders to Canada and Mexico. Sociologists discuss borders as “sorting machines” for modern societies and for the flows of globalization. Who erected borders with what purposes? How did the symbolism and political significance of the border discourse change? What challenges did new forms of border construction play for different groups in American society? What attempts to challenge and subvert border regimes can we find?
