Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
This seminar offers a survey of literary and cultural expressions in the period of American modernism (1900-1940s). The focus is on the representation of diversity in terms of race, class, and gender and the solutions suggested to overcome outdated traditions and their patterns of discrimination. In the combination of familiar and less studied examples we will transcend the narrow philological period definition to account for the contributions of underprivileged people and underrepresented genres to a diversified transnational modernism.
Please see the syllabus in the Inhalt section and start reading the texts during the semester break.
