Inhalt: This course aims to engage with documentary filmmaking from three perspectives. We will explore different modes including personal and experimental documentaries, essay film and diary film. In addition to thinking about the historical evolution of documentary cinema, we will further uncover how documentary cinema became a medium for (re)writing histories. Furthermore, we will also investigate diverse creative practices that are shaping the documentary genre. The questions we will raise and respond to include how is reality crafted, stimulated, or reproduced through the audio-visual tools of documentary cinema? How do documentary films engage with history/histories? Is it an art of capturing or observing? Or a form of documentation/mockumentation? How are new digital technologies and mediums influencing documentary filmmaking?
