Inhalt:
Would you currently care to swap places with Olaf Scholz or … Emmanuel Macron or … Mateusz Morawiecki? After all, they are among the most powerful persons in Europe and, thus, in the world. The worst that, as a rule, can happen to them if their decisions prove to be wrong is that they will not be reelected. And once they leave office, no matter how well they did, a comfortable pension is awaiting them.

On the other hand, in challenging times such as ours, political leaders have to make hard decisions. As Max Weber put it so dramatically: “He who seeks the salvation of the soul, of his own and of others, should not seek it along the avenue of politics”. That is because, as Machiavelli claims, political rulers need to act according to the demands of “virtu” that is: they need to be able and willing to do what is necessary to achieve (hopefully) justified ends. In other words, they must, if necessary, be willing to get their hands dirty: to authorize the sale of weapons to governments involved in war, the shooting down of highjacked planes, the torturing of terrorists who have planted a bomb that will kill very many very innocent persons. Or do they?

Many political philosophers have written on the issue of “Dirty Hands”. We will look at the most thought-provoking of them for guidance on how to evaluate the actions of our political leaders facing hard choices.
