Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: Further information and instructions with regard to this class will be made available on Moodle! Please make sure you have read the information on Moodle before the first class.
Inhalt: What does it mean to decolonise something? Building case studies drawn from film, literature, sport, fashion, tourism and music, you will be given the opportunity to explore this question by bringing together pop culture and postcolonial theory. We will investigate, for example, if and how James Bond connects with the Black Lives Matter movement, if wearing a Maori facial tattoo (Ta moko) could get you kicked-off the fashion runway, or, why the recent period drama Oktoberfest 1900 got away with portraying a tribe of Samoan cannibals without causing a Shitstorm. By studying these and other – you are invited to suggest your own – examples of pop culture we will assess their significance for the decolonisation of contemporary translation practices and translation studies. This project-course is for students interested in adding basic concepts from postcolonial studies to their toolbox and those who want to find out how diverse language and translation skills contribute to global decolonisation processes.
Empfohlene Literatur: The Oxford handbook of postcolonial studies / edited by Graham Huggan
