Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:

Preliminary Discussion / Introduction: All questions relating to organization will be answered in the first session of this seminar (April 20, 2023).

Procedure and Requirements: Students who take this course as an Übung (3 ECTS) give an oral presentation (including a PowerPoint); those who take it as a seminar (6 ECTS) also submit a written paper (in addition to giving an oral presentation and preparing a PowerPoint). Your papers should average 12–15 pages of text plus outline and bibliography, and should be written in English. The papers must be submitted, at the latest, on August 15, 2023. For the form of your paper, please check “A Guide to Writing Term Papers” on our new home page (Studiensprachen/Englisch/Ressourcen/Amerikanistik) and, for reasons of simplicity, the 7th (2009), not the 8th (2016) or 9th (2021), edition of the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers (see Lehrbuchsammlung). Your oral report should average 20–25 minutes. Further details will be announced in the first seminar session (April 20, 2023).

Inhalt:

In this seminar, we will analyze three masterpieces of black humor crime and dramedy: Joel and Ethan Coen’s cult movie Fargo (PolyGram, 1996), Noah Hawley’s ingenious serial transcreation of the same title (FX-MGM, first season, 2014), and Martin McDonagh’s Academy, Golden Globe, and BAFTA Award-winning crime drama film Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (Fox Searchlight Pictures, 2017). Following up on Mike Bedard’s statement that “black comedy takes humanity’s worst impulses and throws a pie right in their faces” (“What is Black Comedy?” [2020] n. pag.), special emphasis will be placed on how these masterpieces employ social criticism, neonaturalist thinking, and comic relief in their darkly humorous portrayal of ept and inept individuals in the face of forces beyond their control.

In the first session on April 20, I will provide you with background materials and a bibliography of secondary sources.
