Inhalt:
With the increasing extinction of animal and plant species due to habitat loss, agricultural practices and climate change, we also face losing the ability to speak about them. This course aims at fostering the languages we employ towards other species and thus grant them more awareness. We will explore ways of reflecting on our cultural and linguistic relationships to the rest of life, and we will attempt to broaden our everyday nature vocabulary.
To this end, we will discuss three contemporary British Nature Diaries: Mark Cocker’s A Claxton Diary (2019), Karen Lloyd’s The Blackbird Diaries (2017) and Dara McAnulty’s Diary of a Young Naturalist (2020). To sustain our analysis, we will also consult theory on Nature Writing and diary writing.

Apart from its content-related aims, this course will also be designed to equip you with the tools for writing a term paper in the form of a literary analysis. You will be offered a number of reading and writing tasks to gradually develop your paper throughout the semester. You will also be expected to present on your research in class.

REQUIREMENTS
- completion of tasks throughout the semester
- at the end of the semester: term paper (12-15 pages)

Empfohlene Literatur:
All reading material will be provided via LMS Moodle.
However, once you have decided which book you’d like to write your term paper on, you are advised to buy this book. (No need to decide this in advance; I will give you a reminder around the middle of term.)

Digitale Lehre:
This seminar will be an in-person course.
