Inhalt: “Irishmen and Irishwomen” are explicitly addressed in the Proclamation of the Republic at the Easter Rising in 1916, a conspicuously egalitarian statement at the time. The Irish constitution of 1937 however flouted this, most markedly in Article 40, stating that “by her work within the home woman” contributed to the national cause. In 2015, Ireland became the first country to legalise same-sex marriage through popular vote, predating the overwhelmingly successful referendum on legalising abortion in 2018. In that year, men in Ireland were five times more likely to commit suicide than women, a fact popular artist, satirist and podcaster Blindboy Boatclub has attributed to a crisis of masculinity and lack of feminism. This class investigates historic and contemporary constructions and practices of genders in Ireland through a variety of cultural products, e.g. paintings, performances, speeches, songs, reportage, interviews, legal and literary texts. In doing so, students will become acquainted with basic theories and methods of cultural studies and be enabled to develop a gendered history of Ireland.
