Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:

                                                    I like this place
And willingly could waste my time in it. (Shakespeare, As You Like It 2.4.93-94)

This semester, I invite you to “waste” some time in the Forest of Arden – spending (i.e. early modern “wasting”) your time learning how to read, research and interpret early modern drama through various critical lenses. The text at the centre of this class will be William Shakespeare’s comedy As You Like It (first performed around 1599). It will be our starting point into exploring related early modern texts, contexts and ideas – from concepts of (female) friendship to popular early modern entertainment such as wrestling and cockfighting, the forest as a space beyond the law (Robin Hood plays!), wordplay, ballads and jigs, as well as the idea of the Theatrum Mundi (“All the world’s a stage”; 2.7.140).

This class will (re)introduce you to basic academic skills: close reading, academic research as well as written and spoken argument based on critical thinking.

Anwesenheitspflicht:
Attendance is mandatory for this course.
