Inhalt: "All that Glitters is not Gold": Tales of Golden and Gilded Ages in American Literature Gold – materially and metaphorically – is deeply embedded in the cultural and literary history of the U.S. Since long before the Gold Rush years and until today, Gold has been a powerful symbol for the ambivalences of the U.S. economy, politics, and society. In this seminar, we want to look at how Gold has found its way into U.S. American Literature across different times, spaces, and genres. From a transnational perspective, we will discuss how this noble (?) and ever circulation metal shaped dominant and submerged narratives of U.S. American identity throughout (not only) the Golden and Gilded Ages. Among shorter texts and excerpts by, e.g., Jack London, Emma Lazarus, and Robert Frost, we will also read the two novels The Gilded Age by Mark Twain and Charles Dudley and Sanjena Sathian’s 2021 novel Gold Diggers.
