Inhalt:
In this colloquium, we will work our way through Lennon's (2021) The foundations of teaching English and Kortmann's (2020) English linguistics. Essentials. 2nd ed. (required reading). These books will form the basis for in-class discussions and presentations about how to teach linguistics contents and do linguistics exercises in EFL schoolbooks (schoolyears 5-10). Yes, you need English linguistics for school. In fact, you will teach virtually nothing but linguistics (aka grammar, vocab, word-structure and sounds, etc.) until you start teaching about the American Dream or read Shakespeare with your pupils.

In this course, we will
- gain an understanding of first and second language acquisition
- review important relevant terminology and concepts you will need as EFL teachers
- show how the relevant exercises could be incorporated in an EFL lesson
- discuss how you can use lay terminology where necessary to explain the linguistic concepts.

Course requirements:

- active participation with regular attendance (max. of two missed sessions)
o   to do BEFORE each session:

  • required reading
  • SLA & TEFL lit: write excerpts (handwritten & colour-coded with notes)
  • Kortmann chapters: update/check/fill in key terms list (ILIAS) with concrete examples (you may reuse your key terms lists from the Introduction to English linguistics lecture in your very first semester) and bring to class

o   in class:

  • engage in discussions, pose relevant questions
  • week 5-13: you need to prepare and guide your fellow students through one in-class exercise (pretend school lesson; topic raffle in class)
  • take notes for each pretend lesson

o   portfolio: excerpts, key term lists, pretend lesson handouts with notes

- oral exam in February (15’): topic 1: SLA & (T)EFL; topic 2: Linguistics in the Classroom
