The seminar will discuss major texts e.g. by Frederick Douglass, Harriet Jacobs, William Wells Brown, Sojourner Truth and others. Special attention will be paid to narrative strategies, inscribed readers, public reception, and recent debates of the subgenre. A valuable collection can be found in Slave Narratives in The Library of America, Vol. 114, ed. by William L. Andrews.
