Inhalt: This course is designed as a practical introduction to the field of American studies. Its primary goal is to familiarize beginning students with those concepts and ideas that scholars have used to describe, analyze, and interpret American literature, culture, and history. In discussing literary texts, material objects, media, cultural, and performances from all periods of American history, students will be introduced to the different methodologies employed by Americanists. By the end of the semester, students will have learned a critical vocabulary that will enable them to create critical, interpretative texts of their own that include observation, description, analysis, and explanation.
