Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
Procedure and Requirements: Following a pre-departure orientation session on October 24, 2023 (introduction & organization), our program will be divided into two parts. In the first part (Oct. 31 to Nov. 21), you will tackle the subject via reading assignments on contexts relevant to understanding Cheyfitz’s approach and achievement (“Independent Studies,” distance learning, no face-to-face classes). For the second part (Dec. 5 to Feb. 6), after proving your comprehension of the above-mentioned reading assignments (“Quiz”, Dec. 5), you will prepare an oral presentation (25–30 minutes [including handout]). For this, you can either introduce us to a chapter from The Poetics of Imperialism (a); to the book’s evaluation in selected reviews (b); or to the highly critical assessment of both The Poetics of Imperialism and postcolonial translation studies in Robinson’s Translation and Empire (“Student Presentations & Instructor Feedback,” face-to-face training). Since the workload resulting from the combination of reading assignments, oral presentations, and handouts is more than enough for a practice course (Übung), there will be no final exam.
Anwesenheitspflicht:
For a successful performance in this practice course, regular attendance is strongly recommended.
Inhalt:
For quite some time now, the relation between translation and power has been at the forefront of postcolonial criticism. In this practice course, after familiarizing ourselves with historical, theoretical, and disciplinary contexts, we will read and analyze Eric Cheyfitz’s The Poetics of Imperialism (1991/97), one of the foundational texts of postcolonial translation studies. A look at some of the criticisms that have been waged against this provocative, if controversial, history of the role of translation in Anglo-American culture (including reviews and its discussion in Douglas Robinson’s Translation and Empire [1997, 2014]) will help us to put this influential, if perhaps too ambitious, book in proper perspective. The aim of this course is to provide you with a better understanding of translation in the English-speaking world and to train you in reading and comprehending high-quality academic texts in your field of study.
