Inhalt:
This seminar explores the philosophical idea of the "end of art" and the concrete manifestations of what may be termed the "art of the end".

The philosophical idea of the "end of art" does not mean that art is finished or has reached its limits. Instead, it suggests that art has reached a point of maturity and self-awareness, and that it is now capable of reflecting on its own nature and purpose. This is the view of philosophers such as G. W. F. Hegel, Theodor W. Adorno, Herbert Marcuse, Arthur C. Danto, Fredric Jameson, or Ben Davis, whose texts we will study in this seminar.

We will also take a closer look at a number of contemporary works that fall under the rubric of the "art of the end" (e.g. works such as those by Kysa Johnson, Sarah Sze, or Rei Naito). These works often incorporate within themselves the idea of the "end of art", as well as the sense of a certain social-political and cultural end tied to the ambient democratic malaise, climate change, or the recent geopolitical belligerence. We will also ask whether these works are meant to reach out to a reality beyond this end, that is to say, to a new and alternative beginning.

This seminar aims to introduce students to the Hegelian view of art as the material, self-reflective (re-)presentation of Spirit [geist] at a particular stage of its historical unfolding. In other words, art is seen as a way for Spirit to understand itself and its/the world. While the different moments of art’s becoming, namely, particular works of art, are seen as tangible aspects of Spirit’s "forms of [aesthetic] consciousness".

In this light, some of the thematic questions that will preoccupy us are:

  • What does it mean for art to have reached its "end"?
  • How do contemporary works of art that are considered to be "art of the end" reflect this idea?
  • How is the "end of art" connected to the social and cultural changes of our time?

By the end of this seminar, students will have acquired a good understanding of some core ideas of the theorists studied. Students will also have the opportunity to sharpen their ability to interpret philosophical texts critically and analytically, as well as their ability to produce well-argued, text-sensitive and carefully presented discussions of major philosophical and social-political themes.
