Inhalt: This seminar examines the power and influence of the financial sector in the global economy. It asks: What is the role of the financial sector in contemporary economies? Who holds power in financial markets, and how is this power exercised? What are the causes and consequences of financial crises? Can the commercial interests of financial actors be aligned with the political goals of the state? How should we think about digital finance, venture capital, and cryptocurrencies? To respond to these questions the seminar introduces a range of theoretical approaches from the disciplinary research tradition of International Political Economy (IPE). Students will learn how to analyse and critically question the ‘actually existing’ commercial practices of financial companies, and their evolving relationships with the regulatory authorities of the state.
