Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:

Procedure and Requirements: Our program is divided into two parts. In both of these parts, we will proceed in three steps. In the first step of part one, you will select a topic from a list of authentic exam topics that BA and MA students have chosen over the last 30 years. In the second step, you will prepare this topic as you see fit (independent studies phase, no face-to-face class, 2 weeks). In the third step, you will be examined on this topic in a mock exam (instructor–student), with a volunteer serving as a minute taker and the group as a whole as feedback givers. If two or more students are willing to prepare the same topic independently from each other, you will also have the opportunity to assume the role of examiner (student–student mock exams). In part two, we will follow the same three–step procedure to practice grant application interviews. Here, you will either select a university (one with which we have an exchange agreement or an elite university) or a grant from institutions such as Fulbright or DAAD, prepare a strategy for application, and see how you fare in a mock interview. Depending on the number of course members, you will be able to try out several or all of the above–mentioned roles. If we manage to get access to the most recent version of ChatGPT, we will also experiment with how artificial intelligence can be used to optimize exam and interview preparation. Expected contributions to this practice course include the willingness to, 1) work on a topic and/or application; 2) participate in a mock exam and/or application interview on the date(s) scheduled; and 3) provide your fellow students with the feedback they need to improve their skills of self–presentation.

Course Description: This Practice Course is designed to help you succeed in oral examinations and grant application interviews. For this purpose, we will engage in the following activities:

-- Preparing an exam topic or grant application;
-- Assuming the roles of examiner/interviewer, exam/interview candidate, and minute taker in mock exams and interviews of varying intensity;
-- Providing feedback on the respective performances;
-- Testing ChatGPT’s potential in preparing and simulating exam situations.

Success in real oral exams and application interviews has a lot to do with preparation, acting abilities, and anticipation strategies. If you follow through with the training offered in this course, you will have learned how to, 1) prepare an exam topic or application interview systematically and efficiently; 2) adapt to different styles (e.g., slow or fast) and atmospheres (e.g., friendly or hostile) of examination/interviewing; and 3) show the right kind of spirit, motivation, and attitude that leads to a good performance under pressure. Once you allow yourself the freedom, courage, and relaxation that comes with role–playing, exam (or interview) anxiety will be a thing of the past.
