Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: In the first half of the twentieth century, Britain underwent radical change. The devastating impact of two world wars and the economic depression of the 1930s saw British society struggle in various ways to negotiate the changes brought by modernity. Yet, in this half century, remarkable progress was made: universal suffrage was attained, and people of all classes enjoyed leisure activities – radio and film, travel and tourism – which gave them new opportunities to reflect on the world in which they lived. This lecture series, which examines the role of literature, culture and society in Britain between 1900 and the start of World War II, will be investigating the nature of “modernity” in the first half of the twentieth century, and the tensions between tradition and modernity that continue to shape British society today.
