This overview lecture will familiarise students with the many theories that comprise Cultural Studies. It will begin by defining Culture and Cultural Studies and will then work its way through theories of identity, class, gender and sexuality, race and ethnicity, and others. Students will normally be expected to read a theory text (sometimes in excerpts) in preparation for its presentation in the lecture. They will furthermore have a look at a cultural artefact (which can be a literary text, a pop song, an image, an art work, a building, etc.). The presented theories will then be applied to this artefact. Depending on the size of the group, there should be room for discussion as well. Theory texts and artefacts will be available on Reader by the start of the term, as will be the provisional timetable.
The Prüfungsleistung for this lecture is a 30-minute exam.
Please note: ?This course ends sooner than regular ones due to the lecturer’s exchange visit at our partner York University, Toronto, Canada, from late June to early August 2016. This is also the reason why the sessions are longer (120 minutes) than regular ones. This means that they start on the hour and finish on the hour.
