This class will explore the intersection of drama and politics before, during, and after the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s. First, we will focus on how African American dramatists responded to the early civil rights movement of the 1950s. Considering the dramatic works of playwrights Lorraine Hansberry, Adrienne Kennedy, LeRoi Jones/Amiri Baraka, Ed Bullins and others, we will investigate how African American drama has moved away from European forms of dramatic production during the 1960s and 1970s. In addition, we will discuss the impact of the Civil Rights Movement and the Black Arts Movement on contemporary African American drama.
