Requirements / organisational issues:
The aim of the course is to give an insight into basic aspects of teaching English a foreign language in order to provide the participants with relevant knowledge for their first teaching experiences and internships. A shift of perspective from former pupil to future teacher requires students to discover the English classroom from a new angle and get acquainted with current theoretical concepts in the fields of EFL methodology and foreign language acquisition.  Students should be encouraged to develop their own principles and ideas and will have the chance to analyze their beliefs about language teaching and possibly call some of them into question. This course focuses on practical aspects of teaching English as a foreign language and will refer to prior knowledge students have acquired in the preceding lecture. It will provide an overview of key aspects and current debates in the field of teaching English in regard to the functional communicative skills listening, speaking, reading and writing as well as pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar. Planning lessons, analyzing teaching materials and applying communicative or playful activities will be crucial elements of this course. Regular attendance and active participation are expected and students are required to complete assignments punctually and to the required standard. Further course requirements will be announced in the first session.
