The short story is one of the most popular forms of American fiction. From the Early Republic to the present, authors have explored, extended, and revised this genre, and they have added new cultural, psychological, and ethnic perspectives. This proseminar will explore the development of the American short story and provide an introduction to short story theory. Authors include Washington Irving, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edgar Allan Poe, Kathrine Anne Porter, Kate Chopin, Susan Glaspell, Sherwood Anderson, William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, Alice Walker, and Sherman Alexie.
