As the Xingu tribe in Brazil has made clear when they “hijacked” the website of David Cameron’s blockbusting feature film Avatar, the destruction of native lands in our contemporary world is taking place not only on screen, but in real life as well. This seminar will look at the link between environmental concerns and indigenous rights: How and through what media do indigenous writers, activists, directors and dramatists resist the environmental destruction of their lands? Our discussion will link literary texts such as Leslie Marmon Silko’s Almanac of the Dead to feature films such as Powwow Highway, and will also explore the legal framework of indigenous rights discussions, such as the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. At the end of the seminar, we will stage a mock trial which will address one particular case of environmental justice as it affects indigenous rights. If environmental justice and indigenous rights were indeed in our hands, what would our verdict be?
