In this class we will discuss three Shakespeare plays – A Midsummer Night's Dream, Twelfth Night, and Othello – and will explore themes such as love, gender, rulership (good and bad), and race. We will also consider questions of staging the plays.
For students who prefer to receive a lot of additional information while reading the plays, I recommend the Arden Shakespeare editions, while students who prefer focusing on the text itself might want to get editions with endnotes rather than footnotes, e.g., the Penguin Shakespeare editions.
Please note that you are expected to use print editions for discussions in class.
