In the U.S., the second half of the nineteenth century witnessed a veritable explosion of visual or pictorial material: photographs, illustrated magazines, panoramas, advertising cards and posters, picture postcards, and, around the turn of the century, movies. Some critics were worried about pictorial media eclipsing the written word and generally contributing to cultural degeneracy, but their enormous success with the public spoke for itself. In this class we will take a look at the media landscape of the Gilded Age, the production processes of various pictorial media, individual case studies of Gilded Age visual culture, and the cultural repercussions of the growing visuality of American culture during the second half of the nineteenth century.
