Contents:
In this seminar, we will, of course, read the texts that have traditionally been discussed in the context of the "American Renaissance" - namely, the writings of Emerson, Thoreau, Whitman, and Hawthorne. More importantly, however, we will explore how the "American Renaissance" originated as a concept, how this concept developed in the ensuing decades, and how changes in the concept reflected larger, paradigmatic changes in the discipline of American studies. Students will learn, then, as much about 19th-century American literature and culture as about the reception and criticism of this culture during the 20th and 21st centuries.

Relevant texts will be provided via ILIAS.
