Beyond Translation Competence: Towards a Holistic Perspective on Being and Becoming a Language Professional

In this seminar, we will be taking an unconventional and multi-facetted perspective to investigate the concepts of "translator competence" and "translator competence acquisition" --  which are ubiquitous in contemporary discussions on the work of the professional translator and within the field of translator education.

In an attempt to expand the basis for thinking about the "competence" question, which we may find is both restricted and confining in scope, we will be drawing on powerful arguments from fields outside of translation studies per se, including: neuro- and cognitive science, educational philosophy and psychology, and complexity theory.

We will start out with an enterprise that is largely neglected in our technology-saturated modern era: taking stock of a range of epistemological views and assumptions (about what it means to ‘know’) that have been with us for millennia: from empiricism to rationalism and constructivism... and beyond.

Armed with a broad range of essential epistemological concepts and perspectives that can be seen to underlie and underpin many social and particularly educational practices, we will then undertake a broad, multi-disciplinary survey of research findings related to social, cognitive and professional (inter)lingual and intercultural processes.

This seminar should be of interest to advanced students (with a solid mastery of English):

1. Who would like to better understand what it means to be and become true ‘professionals’ in one or more language-related domains;

and/or

2. Who might be interested in undertaking an MA thesis in one of the fields or domains we will be focusing on;

Learning approach

This will NOT be a lecture course! All participants who intend to receive credit for this course will be expected to work proactively and interactively in the pursuit of new understandings and insights related to the subject at hand. We will be using a range of background materials including readings and videos to prepare for our seminar sessions, and we will have several researchers attend some of our sessions to share their work with us.

In addition to participating regularly and constructively in our classroom sessions, students will work in teams to write a paper in English on one of the course topics that is of interest to them.
