In this seminar we will study the Caribbean as an important place caught between Western Europe and North America and partly created, but tremendously transformed by these outsider forces. We will read three novels, and several short stories by Julia Alvarez, Earl Lovelace, Mary Prince, Samuel Selvon, C.L. R. James, Jamaica Kincaid, Paule Marshall, George Lamming, Edwidge Dandicat, Patricia Powell, Marlon James, Derek Walcott, Michelle Cliff, and V.S. Naipaul. And yes, we will have one session about Rastafarians and Bob Marley.
Recommended reading list:
While I will make the short texts available for you in ReaderPlus, you should buy the following three books and start to read them as soon as possible. Any edition will be fine.
Julia Alvarez, How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accent
Michelle Cliff, Abeng
V.S. Naipaul, Miguel Street
Additional information:
Your active class participation will include short quizzes from time to time to see whether you actually read the material. In addition, you will be part of a short group presentation (about 10 – 15 minutes). These presentations will cover some important historical background information and will help us to understand the different issues our authors address in their texts.
