Practices like fasting, keeping vigils, poverty, celibacy and separation from family were a central part of Christian religious life in the early church. In this seminar, we will investigate asceticism in the practice of Christianity of the fourth century, after first examining asceticism from a theoretical practice as construed in the works of Michel Foucault (History of Sexuality) and in the collection of articles in the volume Asceticism, edited by Vincent Wimbush and Richard Valantasis. Students are expected to keep up with a rigorous schedule of reading, to participate in class discussions and collaborative activities. Assessment will be in the form of an essay (Hauptseminararbeit). It is necessary to have advanced English skills in order to participate, but the essay should be written in German.
