In this class we will read and discuss original text material (essays, fiction, legal documents, newspaper articles) concerning concepts of nature beginning with the colonies until the late 19th century. We will analyse the change of attitudes towards and ideas on nature and the environment. The focus will be on the Puritan view of nature, the nature experience of the settlers during the westward expansion, Transcendentalist ideas of nature and the development of an environmental consciousness in the 19th century.
