Contents:
This course reads a small selection of the most important texts in the last 50 years of Canadian drama as well some of those that are less well known. It discusses these texts in terms of the socio-political conditions under they arise and which informs their major themes and aesthetics. It examines the relations between theatre, culture and politics as they are understood through the theoretical lenses of feminism and materialism. In draws connections between the ideas generated in and by the plays, the historical period and social conditions in which they are produced, and the elements of mis en scene, through which they are realized and embodied.
