This course is designed to introduce one of the most important political experiments in the recent history – Eastward Enlargement of the European Union, and to familiarize the students with the most salient issues accompanying this complex set of processes, as well as recent trends and future Enlargement prospects. The course will cover the recent enlargement rounds (2004, 2007 and 2013) of Enlargement process and look at the impact the enlargement process had on the new member states as well as examine its consequences and changes in the internal dynamics of the European Union as such. The course will focus on case studies from the CEE region concentrating on issues such as rule of law, corruption, immigration, identity and security.
