Requirements / organisational issues:
A sound reading knowledge of French.
Readiness to try and tackle language with linguistic tools - facing thus the material basis of all text production.
Contents:
Occitan was the first Romance standard language.
This made it a natural reference for parallel developments in other Romance language areas - including the field of literture where the - Occitan writing - trobadors were the founding moment of European literature.
While considering different approaches of linguistics, our activity will be focussed on reading texts.
As Occitan has had a profound influence on other Romance languges - and on Latin Christendom in general -, course details will be discussed in the first meeting with reference to previous knowledge of students; other Romance languages will be a bonus, but are by no means a precondition for inscription.
Recommended reading list:
Lexikon der Linguistischen Romanistik (LRL): vol. "Okzitanisch und Katalanisch" (articles mostly in French).
Additional - course centred and annotated - bibliography in first session.
Further books will be found on the "Apparate"-shelf under my name (to be consumed with discernment!).
Central and Seminary)Libraries in traditional centres of Higher Education - this would in our region apply to Heidelberg - tend to have good (historic) holdings in (Old)Occitan.
