Modernism is a short-lived, but very influential period in Western artistic and intellectual debates. More recently, the term has been broadened to include non-European and -American manifestations. This lecture series, however, is designed to reduce students' perplexity and sometimes fear when it comes to approaching Modernist texts that, in their experimentalism, seem to contradict everything students have learned about literature. It is designed to show how the diverse Western Modernist deal with questions of subjectivity and objectivity, time and space, as well as with the material of literature: language. It will cover well-known names, such as Joseph Conrad, Gertrude Stein, T.S. Eliot, Virginia Woolf, W.B. Yeats, Ezra Pound, and James Joyce, but also slightly lesser known figures, including Wyndham Lewis, Amy Lowell, H.D. [hilda doolittle]. and Edith Sitwell.
There is no need to prepare for this lecture. Just bring an open mind. If you need some prior briefing, Peter Nicholls Modernisms (1995) is still a very good starting point.
