Seminar: Introduction to translation theory specifically regarding the language pair Chinese-Germen/German-Chinese

Please note the language of instruction of this course. It is German. However, some of the assigned reading may be in English or even Chinese.

This seminar is a mandatory course for students studying Chinese as a foreign langauge. It is offered in the winter term only. All new master's students with Chinese as a foreign language are expected to take this course in their first (winter) term.

Those students who study another foreign language besides Chinese are asked to contact Dr. Schindelin, if they are not sure whether they are in fact required to take the TK-1 module or this course.

Contents:
In this seminar we are going to familiarize ourselves with the theoretical foundations of translation. Activities to do that will include presentations, assigned readings, discussions and specific exercises.

Studying the ideas and theories at the basis of translating will enable students to understand translation processes and their role within them better, to translate more methodically and with better understanding of what is expected of them, as well as to evaluate the quality of translations reasonably.

We shall also look at the relative roles of other people involved in the translation process during its various phases, translation aids, typical categories of translation problems related to the language pair in question and strategies that can help to arrive at their solution.
