Requirements / organisational issues:
This course is called "Yuedu (Reading)" and is aimed at exercising reading comprehension in Chinese.
Courses of the module "Applied Chinese" can be chosen from the very beginning of master's studies with Chinese as a foreign language.
According to the module rules applying at the moment, it is required to hand in a portfolio in order to get a "passed" for this course.
Contents:
In this reading course we are going to read various texts in Chinese and work with their contents. To do this, we are going to apply different techniques and work on different kinds of questions, pursuing a number of aims pertaining to the skill of reading, or more specifically, reading comprehension: raising reading speed, improving the processing of larger chunks of text, and improving the ability to read on despite "gaps" in word comprehension. We shall encounter various ways of achieving text cohesion as well as different text structures, and at the same time learn this or that about Chinese socio-culture and recent Chinese history.
Recommended reading list:
You want to improve your Chinese reading skill?
Just read something that interests you in Chinese every day, taking something like a quarter of an hour of your time for that.
It doesn't matter whether you choose fiction or technical texts or whatever, as long as you are interested in the contents.
Additional information:
Participants are expected to be prepared to frequently use the Chinese language when working on questions and discussing texts.
Erasmus students who want to take part are expected to have a HSK certificate of level 4 or an equivalent, and to contact Dr. Schindelin of the Chinese Department before choosing this course.
