The topic of the seminar is the formation and evolution of Athenian democracy.
In the 6th and 5th centuries BC, there were profound changes in the political and social structures of the Polis Athens. Step by step, from the rule of a few aristocrats, a rule of the people, the demos, developed. These changes were also refelcted in the self-image of Athenian citizens.
The seminar examines developments and forms of the political institutions. The extent to which this change influenced classical culture is examined using contemporary sources. In the end, an attempt is made to compare ancient and modern democracy.
