This course is designed to introduce you to several key moments in Native American history, their political and social implications, and cultural representations in literature and media.
The events that we will discuss and analyze are Indian Removal and the Cherokee Trail of Tears (1820s-30s), allotment policies and their consequences for Native Americans, especially during the oil boom (1880s-1920s) in Oklahoma, the formation of the American Indian Movement in the 1970s, and the recent Standing Rock protests in North Dakota.
Digital teaching:
Please note that this course will be taught exclusively through the online platform Moodle. In this asynchronous course, we will work with brief introductions to the topics, study guides and assignments on primary texts, occasional online discussion forums, and links to videos and other online material. Completing these activities in Moodle will count as "active participation."
You will be informed about how and in what format the final exam of this course will take place as soon as the examination office has further information about how to conduct exams in the Summer Term 2020.
