Recent years have seen the publication and success of a variety of franchises aimed at adolescent audiences, and young adult fiction has become an important force on the literary market. This class discusses YA fiction’s roots, challenges and attributes. The seminar aims at honoring the field’s complex connections to the literary and socio-political realm. The discussion of three influential North American novels of the last twenty years applies the theoretical framework and emphasizes the various forms of young adult fiction’s engagement with matters of identity-formation and popular culture.
Please obtain the following novels:
- Stephen Chbosky: The Perks of Being a Wallflower (1999)
- Angie Thomas: The Hate U Give (2017)
- Cherie Dimaline: The Marrow Thieves (2017)
Further texts and articles will be made available via the online reader at the beginning of the semester. I strongly advise you to start reading before the semester to keep up with the schedule.
