In this class we are going to approach the history of the Portuguese language from different perspectives in order to trace its evolution from the early beginnings to being one of the “major” Romance Languages.
In doing so, we will take internal and external linguistic factors into account. We will look at the development of Portuguese from Latin over several stages as well as its expansion from the periphery of the Iberian Peninsula to South America, Africa and Asia. Furthermore, we will discuss the consequences of said expansion over time, e.g. the formation of linguistic varieties – especially European and Brazilian Portuguese – and the effects of contact with other languages. In light of this, movements for the “normalizations” of Portuguese in the form of grammars and orthographic reforms will also be the subject of discussion.
Another focus is on academic research and writing. We will discuss methods of historical linguistic research, such as working with linguistic corpora and the critical handling of recent and historical language sources.
The aim of the class is to deepen our knowledge about a comparatively less prominent language of study in order to use this knowledge while actively dealing with Portuguese and its varieties.
