In this comparative seminar we will study Polish and Czech theatre plays that were published/written after 1945. Beginning with the critique of Socialist Realism and developping a broad variety of highly innovative forms Polish and Czech theatre after the war has gained a worldwide reputation and made an important contribution to contemporary literature. We will focus the problem to what degree esthetic experiments are situated within a political and social context und might also be considered to be related to the attempt of authors to exert an influence on the public.
We will discuss works of the following writers (german translations are available):
Polish literature: Witold Gombrowicz, Tadeusz Rózewicz, Slawomir Mrozek, Zbigniew Herbert.
Czech literature: Milan Uhde, Ivan Klíma, Pavel Kohout, Václav Havel .
