SHORT DESCRIPTION
While people are increasingly living in urban environments, relationships to “wild nature” are dwindling. What effects does this development have on our psyche and body? How can new relationships to nature be defined and fostered? What can “wild” actually mean in our urban Western societies?
Such questions are the subject of the so-called “Nature Writing”, which deepens our perception of non-human nature via a language that is both scientific and creative. Put simply, “Nature Writing” can also be described as “lyric activism”. In this seminar, we will mainly be concerned with the work of two young female British authors and journalists: Lucy Jones and Alice Vincent.
The first half of the course will cover a theoretical introduction to the field of “Nature Writing” and to the work of the two authors.
In the second half, excerpts of their work are to be translated into German after a short introduction to literary translation and creative writing.
REQUIREMENTS
- active course participation
- term paper in the form of either a commented translation or a literary analysis (10-12 pages)
Digital teaching:
This course will be held online only. We will use Microsoft Teams.
