Digital teaching:
This course will be taught online. All relevant information is made available in our virtual classroom in the Moodle platform. Make sure that you familiarise yourselves with Moodle, which can be accessed with your university account at:
https://lms.uni-mainz.de/moodle/login.
Always use your university e-mail account for online communication and check regularly for updates and messages.

This online course combines assignments for guided self-study with informative input by us. You will also be given the opportunity to ask questions relating to the different topics treated in this lecture course in the Moodle discussion forum.

The lecture is divided into different topics organised in a chronological sequence. Each topic consists of a variety of activities – PowerPoint presentations, handouts, as well as preparatory assignments and tasks for revision – for which we have allotted a certain amount of study time. Exceptions are Topic 1, which covers general information relevant to the course as a whole and to which we will add materials throughout the semester, and Topic 2, Thinking about Literature, which frames topics 3-5 and raises issues in literary studies that go beyond the limits of the three main genres. Topic 6, Writing about Literature, is an introduction to academic writing.

Course Programme:

Topic 1: General Information
Topic 2: Thinking about Literature (27/4-10/5; 22/6-28/6)
Topic 3: Drama (11/5-24/5)
Topic 4: Prose (25/5-7/6)
Topic 5: Poetry (8/6-21/6)
Topic 6: Writing about Literature (29/6-12/7)

Topics 3 and 4 are based on the following study texts:
William Shakespeare, Measure for Measure and the short stories "Yong Goodman Brown" by Nathaniel Hawthorne, "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner, and "My Old Man" by Ernest Hemingway.
Please obtain good critical editions of these sources (Arden or Oxford World’s Classics in the case of Shakespeare; the versions of the stories as they can be found in The Norton Anthology of American Literature).
All other materials will be distributed via Moodle in the course of the semester.

Assignments and tasks will not be checked and graded by us: They are a means for you to extend and apply your knowledge and skills and to prepare you for the exam that completes this lecture. This is a 30-min electronic test covering all information presented in this course. We are as yet unable to say anything concrete about the date of this exam or where it will take place, but will inform you as soon as we know more.
