Travelling as a form of science. French travel literature in the 18th and early 19th century (project seminar)

The course is intended as an introduction to a research project on the machine translation of Alexander von Humboldt's travel diaries. These travel diaries are largely written in French and will be made available in German for the first time. In addition to the editors of the planned edition from Berlin, various disciplines in Germersheim are involved in the project. (Research areas French, English, Translation Studies)
The aim of the proseminar is threefold.
1, Firstly, we want to familiarize ourselves with the specific forms and linguistic conventions of this literature and familiarize ourselves with its cultural and scientific-historical framework. This will be done by reading various text extracts from travel literature by different authors.
2) In addition, the specific translational difficulties of the text form of a travel diary should be addressed. These are of various kinds. In addition to problems of scientific terminology, there are syntactical problems, problems of multilingualism and code-switching as well as problems of scientific terminology (in a historical perspective)
3. We have to deal with the specific historical differences of the french (scientific) language of the early 19th century compared to contemporary French. The aim will be to draw up a kind of list of the most important and recurrent differences that might need to be considered in a pre-editing process.

All this presupposes a willingness on the part of the students to deal with unusual and relatively distant historical texts, but also promises an insight into a cutting-edge research project with its specific methodological problems.
