Parts of speech or word classes are the basis of traditional grammar and can be found in almost every attempt to describe language. Often assumed to be a universal property of languages, parts of speech therefore also influence translation as the ways certain languages handle certain word classes differ.
During the course the origin and the characteristics of parts of speech will be discussed and during the exercises students will train to be able to identify word classes and justify their classification. Furthermore problems that arise in any word class system will be raised by looking at various languages from all over the world.
