Within Russia, 17th century had always been the object of most intensive research and vivid debate, because the evalution of "old-Muscovite", life (before Peter I.) is for Russians a question of identity. But even without such framing, this age inevitably draws interest, in course of which Muscovy witnessed a major civil war, many uprisings, expansion to the Pacific Ocean in the East and to Kiev in the West, and numerous attempts of (military, financial, jurisdictional and ecclesisatical) reform.
