French is an important language, especially for historians, since it has been the language of diplomacy since the XVII. century. It is still an official language in many international institutions (U.N, E.U., OECD, Olympic Games, Universal Postal Union etc.)
This course is designed for students who have little knowledge of the French language.
Throughout the course we train reading competence with sources and various articles about history. The main focus of the course encompasses reading strategies, vocabulary and important grammatical features.
Connections between different languages (Latin, English, different romance Languages, German) help build up a wide vocabulary about historical subjects.
Throughout the "Sommersemester" we will read and translate authentic texts, focusing on important grammatical features, such as: passive voice, relative clauses, questions, conditional clauses, "subjonctif", participle clauses and idiomatic forms.
At the end of the semester the students can take a final exam: a French text is to be translated into German with the help of a dictionary. It is highly recommended to attend the class in order to take the exam, though not mandatory. The exam counts as "Sprachnachweis" (certificate of competence). It is also possible to take the exam at the beginning of the following semester.
